The West Nile Women’s Network

For a Vibrant Women’s Movement in the West Nile Region

There is continually more need for the women in the West Nile region to define an agenda for the change that they would love to see in their lives and in their communities.

The relative absence of the rural face to the women’s movement has made the women’s movement inevitably exclusive to the grass root women. Although enormous strides have been made and documented in the political, economic and
social cultural spheres in numerical political participation, decision making spaces and inclusiveness, a lot has been left to be desired owing to the numerous challenges encountered in quest for a strong and vibrant women’s movement such as no clear directions and leadership, the gap between elites and young feminists and grassroots women, the problem of careerism where many people look at it as a career path, exclusion of diverse women especially from the rural areas, nonownership of the gains and inability to make follow-ups among others.

Feminature Uganda recognizes that in order to build a strong and proactive women’s movement, a concerted effort is required. Feminature Uganda therefore started the West Nile Women’s Network, to encapsulate all the women-led, women-focused organisations and individuals under one umbrella for collective advocacy and for a strong vantage point from which advocacy on the rights of women can be done. The networks major objectives include collective strategic advocacy, resource mobilisation and research.
