The West Nile Fistula Walk

Feminature Uganda has participated in the first-ever Fistula Walk in West Nile, organized by Palma Memorial Hope Center on May 24, 2025, under the theme, “Join the fight to end fistula.” Restoring peace and dignity for women and girls for better lives.” Held in Arua City, the walk aimed to engage 500 individuals from various sectors, including 350 stakeholders from government leadership, partners, healthcare professionals, the private sector, civil society, and cultural and religious organizations. This activity falls under one of Feminature Uganda’s thematic areas, the Sexual Reproductive Health Rights.   In light of statistics showing that the country registers 1,900 new cases annually, this walk aimed to raise at least 60,000,000 in cash and in-kind donations, laying a foundation for the region’s first fistula rehabilitation and social reintegration center. Additionally, the walk sought to empower survivors with post-medical care, psychosocial support, and skills training and enhance networking with various partners for sustainability in the region. The day commenced with an aerobics session at the OPM ground, and later the participants had a walk within the city, passing the different messages, speeches from experts, testimony from some of the survivors, and fundraising.   Dr. Amandu Geoffrey explained that fistula is a condition in women that occurs during birth, causing uncontrollable urine leaking, adding that this condition is mostly with teenage mothers or rape victims. He advised the community to take the necessary precautions before further escalations.
“Fistulas can be fixed through surgery; don’t fear to visit the nearest health facility in case you are in such a condition. It is advisable to deliver in a health facility for proper monitoring,” Amandu said.

Many Women and girls in the region have suffered from this condition due to a lack of information and stigma from the community. This walk sought to create awareness and encourage victims to open up to the health workers without fear of judgement.
